Pinochle Scoring Guide
Complete breakdown of how scoring works in Pinochle
Pinochle scoring determines winners and shapes strategy. Understanding exactly how points are awarded helps you make better decisions throughout the game.
Pinochle Scoring Overview
Scoring in Pinochle comes from two sources: meld points earned during the melding phase, and trick points earned by capturing counter cards during play. Understanding both is essential for accurate bidding and winning play.
Counter Card Values
During trick play, only specific cards have point value when captured:
| Card | Value per Card | Total in Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Ace | 1 point | 8 Aces = 8 points |
| Ten | 1 point | 8 Tens = 8 points |
| King | 1 point | 8 Kings = 8 points |
| Queen | 0 points | ā |
| Jack | 0 points | ā |
| Nine | 0 points | ā |
| Last trick bonus | 1 point | 1 point |
Total trick points available: 25 (24 counters + 1 last trick bonus)

Scoring After Each Round
After all 12 tricks are played, follow this process:
For the Bidding Team:
- Add meld points + trick points captured
- If the total meets or exceeds the bid ā keep all points
- If the total falls short of the bid ā the team is set and loses points equal to the bid (melds and tricks count for nothing)
For the Non-Bidding Team:
- Add meld points + trick points captured
- Keep all points regardless of the bidding team’s outcome
The Save Rule
In many house rules, the non-bidding team must capture at least 1 trick containing a counter to keep their meld points. If they take zero counters, their melds are “burned” ā they score nothing that round. This is sometimes called the “meld-save” rule.
Scoring Examples
Example 1: Making the Bid
- Team A bids 22, declares Spades as trump
- Team A melds: Run (15) + Marriage (2) = 17 meld points
- Team A captures 8 counters + last trick = 9 trick points
- Team A total: 17 + 9 = 26 ā Bid of 22 is met ā +26 points
Example 2: Getting Set
- Team A bids 25, declares Hearts as trump
- Team A melds: Aces Around (10) + Marriage (4) = 14 meld points
- Team A captures 6 counters = 6 trick points
- Team A total: 14 + 6 = 20 ā Short of 25 bid ā ā25 points (set)
Example 3: Non-Bidding Team
- Team B (didn’t bid): melds 8 points, captures 10 trick points
- Team B total: 8 + 10 = 18 points (always kept)
Game Winning Conditions
| Rule Set | Winning Score |
|---|---|
| Standard | 150 points |
| Extended | 200 points |
| Short game | 100 points |
When both teams cross the winning threshold in the same round, the bidding team wins ā they have the privilege of scoring first.
Score Tracking Tips
- Track melds separately from tricks ā know exactly where your points came from each round
- Monitor the opponent’s score ā if they’re close to winning, you may need to bid more aggressively to deny them easy points
- Remember the 25-point max for tricks ā if your bid relies on capturing 15+ trick points, you’re assuming you’ll win most tricks, which is risky
- Factor in the set risk ā a set on a bid of 25 is effectively a 43+ point swing (losing 25 instead of gaining ~18+)
