Complete Pinochle Melds Guide: Here is everything you need to know, with practical tips you can apply in your next game.

Understanding Pinochle Melds

Melding is the heart of what makes Pinochle unique among trick-taking games. After the bidding winner declares trump, all players reveal their melds — specific card combinations that earn bonus points. Mastering the meld system is essential for accurate bidding and winning play.

The Three Meld Categories

Each card in your hand can be used in one meld from each category, meaning a single card can contribute to up to three different melds simultaneously.

Category I: Sequences (Runs and Marriages)

Sequences involve cards of the same suit in a specific order.

MeldCards RequiredPoints
Run (Flush)A-10-K-Q-J of trump15
Double RunA-A-10-10-K-K-Q-Q-J-J of trump150
Royal MarriageK-Q of trump4
Common MarriageK-Q of non-trump suit2

Key notes:

  • A Run already contains a Royal Marriage, but you score only the Run (15 points), not the marriage separately.
  • A Double Run scores 150 points — this is the single most valuable meld in the game.
  • You need both copies of every card in trump to claim a Double Run.

Category II: Groups (Around)

Groups require one card of the same rank from each of the four suits.

MeldCards RequiredPoints
Aces AroundOne Ace from each suit10
Double Aces AroundBoth Aces from each suit (8 total)100
Kings AroundOne King from each suit8
Double Kings AroundBoth Kings from each suit (8 total)80
Queens AroundOne Queen from each suit6
Double Queens AroundBoth Queens from each suit (8 total)60
Jacks AroundOne Jack from each suit4
Double Jacks AroundBoth Jacks from each suit (8 total)40

Note: Double “around” melds are extremely rare. Getting all 8 Aces (both from each suit) scores a massive 100 points.

Category III: Special Melds

MeldCards RequiredPoints

Double PinochleBoth J♦ + both Q♠30
Dix (Deece)9 of trump1

The Pinochle meld is the game’s namesake combination — the Jack of Diamonds paired with the Queen of Spades.

How Card Sharing Works

A single card can participate in one meld per category. Here’s an example:

Suppose you hold: Q♠, Q♥, Q♦, Q♣, J♦, and the trump suit is Spades with K♠ also in your hand.

  • The Q♠ counts toward: Queens Around (Cat II) + Royal Marriage with K♠ (Cat I) + Pinochle with J♦ (Cat III)
  • That’s three melds from one card: 6 + 4 + 4 = 14 points from overlapping melds.

Melding Strategy Tips

  1. Count melds before bidding — your meld count is the foundation of every bid. Add your melds to your estimated trick-taking ability.
  2. Watch for Double Pinochle — if you hold one J♦ and one Q♠, your partner might have the other copies. This is worth signaling through your play.
  3. Trump melds are king — Runs (15 points) and Royal Marriages (4 points) only work in the declared trump suit, so choose trump to maximize your meld total.
  4. Evaluate trump declaration — sometimes declaring a suit with a marriage (4 pts) is better than a suit with an Ace, if it also enables a run or other overlapping melds.
  5. Remember: melds don’t win tricks — a hand full of melds but no Aces or 10s will struggle to capture counters during trick play.

Quick Reference Card

Most valuable melds to watch for:

  • Double Run (150 pts) — almost never happens, but game-changing
  • Double Aces Around (100 pts) — also extremely rare
  • Double Pinochle (30 pts) — uncommon but achievable
  • Run (15 pts) — strong and realistic
  • Aces Around (10 pts) — occurs regularly in play
