Spades Game Room
About Spades
Spades is one of the most popular trick-taking card games in North America, especially beloved in African American communities where it became a staple of social gatherings, college dorms, and online platforms. The game was developed in the United States in the 1930s and spread rapidly during the 1940s. Unlike Hearts or Euchre, Spades does not involve a trump bidding phase — the spade suit is always trump, making it a constant factor in every player’s strategy.
Played by four players in two partnerships, Spades requires players to bid the number of tricks they expect to win before the hand is played. Making your bid is crucial — falling short results in heavy penalties, and overtricks (bags) also accumulate into penalties over time. The nil bid — declaring you will win zero tricks — is one of the game’s most exciting and risky elements, offering a large bonus for success and a steep penalty for failure.
How to Play Spades
Deal 13 cards to each player. All four players bid the number of tricks they expect to win (0 through 13). Partners’ bids combine as a team total. Spades are always trump and may not be led until broken (a spade has been played as a discard). The team earns 10 points per trick bid and made; overtricks beyond the bid (bags) score 1 point each but every 10 bags costs 100 points. Failing to reach your bid costs 10 points per trick bid. A nil bid scores 100 points if successful or -100 if failed. First team to 500 points wins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spades free to play on Rare Pike?
Yes, completely free. No registration or download required.
Why is the spade suit always trump?
Unlike games where trump is chosen by bidding, Spades permanently assigns the spade suit as trump. This consistency shapes strategy from the first card — everyone knows spades beat all other suits before a single card is played.
What is a nil bid in Spades?
A nil bid declares that you will win exactly zero tricks during the hand. A successful nil earns your team 100 bonus points; a failed nil costs 100 points.
What are bags or sandbags in Spades?
A bag is any trick won beyond your team’s bid. Each bag scores 1 point, and they accumulate. Every 10 bags triggers a 100-point sandbag penalty, discouraging consistently low bids designed to rack up extra tricks.
Can spades be led at any time?
No. Spades cannot be led until they have been broken — meaning a player discarded a spade on a previous trick. The exception is when a player holds only spades, in which case they must lead a spade.
