Two-player Pinochle is one of the deepest 2-player card games. It combines the melding satisfaction of Gin Rummy with the trick-taking strategy of Spades, played across two distinct phases. Here are the complete rules.

What You Need

  • Pinochle deck: 48 cards (two copies each of 9, 10, J, Q, K, A in all four suits)
  • 2 players
  • Score sheet (or peg board)

If you don’t have a Pinochle deck, use two standard decks and remove all 2s through 8s.

Card Rankings (High to Low)

A – 10 – K – Q – J – 9 in each suit. Note: 10 is the second-highest card, above King.

Setup and Dealing

  1. Shuffle the 48-card deck
  2. Deal 12 cards to each player (typically 3 or 4 at a time)
  3. Place the remaining 24 cards face-down as the stock pile
  4. Turn the top card of the stock face-up and place it partially under the stock — this card’s suit is trump
  5. If the turned-up card is a 9 (Dix), the dealer immediately scores 10 points

Phase 1: The Trick-and-Draw Phase

This phase lasts for 12 tricks (while the stock has cards).

Playing a Trick

  1. Non-dealer leads the first trick by playing any card

  2. The other player plays any card (they do NOT have to follow suit during Phase 1)

  3. The trick is won by:

    • The higher trump if trump was played
    • The higher card of the led suit if no trump was played
    • If both cards are the same rank and suit (duplicate cards), the card that was led wins
  4. The trick winner:

    • Collects the trick cards (for end-game scoring)
    • May meld one combination (see Melding below)
    • Draws the top card of the stock
    • The trick loser draws the next card
  5. The trick winner leads the next trick

The Dix (Nine of Trump)

If you hold the 9 of trump (called the Dix, pronounced “deece”), you may exchange it for the face-up trump card under the stock at any time after winning a trick. This scores 10 points.

Melding

After winning a trick in Phase 1, you may lay down one meld (combination of cards) from your hand face-up on the table. Melded cards remain in your hand — you can play them in future tricks.

Melding Rules

  • You may only meld one combination per trick won
  • A card can be used in different meld types (e.g., a Queen of Spades can be part of both a marriage and Queens Around and a Pinochle)
  • But a card cannot be reused in the same meld type (you can’t meld two common marriages in the same suit using the same cards)
  • Melded cards sit face-up but remain playable in tricks

Phase 2: The Trick Phase

When the stock is exhausted (after the last card and the face-up trump are drawn), Phase 2 begins. Each player should have 12 cards.

Phase 2 Rules (Stricter)

  1. You must follow suit if you can
  2. If you can’t follow suit and trump was led, you must play trump if you have it
  3. You must win the trick if possible (play a higher card of the led suit, or trump if you can’t follow suit)
  4. The winner of the last trick (trick 24) scores 10 bonus points

Play all 12 remaining tricks.

Counting Trick Points

After all 24 tricks are played, each player counts the point value of the cards they captured in tricks:

CardPoint Value
Ace11
Ten10
King4
Queen3
Jack2
Nine0

Total card points in the deck: 240 (plus 10 for last trick = 250)

Total Scoring

Each player’s total score per hand = Meld points + Trick card points

Play to an agreed target, typically 1,000 points. If both players cross 1,000 in the same hand, the player with the higher total wins.

Strategy Tips

Phase 1 Strategy

  • Build toward melds — Phase 1 is primarily about getting melds on the table
  • Win tricks strategically — You need to win tricks to meld, but don’t waste high cards
  • Watch your opponent’s melds — Their face-up cards tell you what they have
  • Save trump for Phase 2 — You’ll need trump strength when follow-suit rules kick in
  • Exchange the Dix early — Getting the face-up trump card is almost always valuable

Phase 2 Strategy

  • Count Aces and 10s — These are worth 11 and 10 points each; capturing them matters
  • Lead trump — Pull your opponent’s trump, then run your strong suits
  • Track the remaining cards — By Phase 2, you’ve seen enough cards to know what’s left
  • Win the last trick — It’s worth 10 bonus points
