How to win at Hearts — avoid penalty cards, control the flow of tricks, and know when to shoot the moon.

Hearts is about avoiding points — but the best players do more than dodge. They control which tricks they win, manipulate what suits are played, and occasionally flip the script with a perfectly timed moon shot.

Strategy 1: Master the Pass

The three cards you pass set up your entire hand. Here’s what to pass:

Card Type Pass It? Why
A♠, K♠ (no low spades) Yes You’ll be forced to win a spade trick and eat the Queen
Q♠ (with only 1-2 spades total) Yes Can’t duck — it’s a 13-point time bomb
High hearts (A♥, K♥) Usually yes They’ll win heart tricks = points
High cards in your shortest suit Yes Create a void for dumping later
Low cards in any suit Keep These are your safety cards

Creating Voids

Pass all 3 cards from one suit to create a void. When that suit is led, you can’t follow suit and can dump:

  • Hearts (penalty points on someone else)
  • Queen of Spades (13 points on someone else)
  • High cards you don’t want

Voids win Hearts games.

Strategy 2: Manage the Queen of Spades

The Queen is 13 of the 26 penalty points. Handling her correctly is half the game.

When to pass her: You have 0-2 other spades and can’t duck.

When to keep her: You have 3+ low spades (3♠, 5♠, 7♠). You can play low when spades are led and let the Queen sit safely until you choose to dump her.

When to lead spades: When you DON’T have the Queen but suspect someone else does — force them to play high or risk taking her.

Strategy 3: Choose Your Tricks Wisely

In Hearts, you control whether you win a trick by playing high or low:

Situation Play High Play Low
No penalty cards in the trick ✅ Safe to win Unnecessary
Hearts have been played ❌ Avoid winning ✅ Duck under
Q♠ might appear ❌ Dangerous ✅ Play low
You’re last to play (4th seat) ✅ Safe if no penalties ✅ If there are hearts

The 4th seat advantage: When you’re last to play, you can see all three other cards. If no penalty cards are in the trick, safely win it with a high card to control the next lead.

Strategy 4: Lead Low, Lead Smart

Your Hand Best Lead
Long suit of low cards Lead low — force others to play high
Short suit Lead it to drain your holding, getting closer to a void
Mid-range cards only Lead your second-lowest — save the very lowest for emergencies
After many cards played Lead a suit where all higher cards are gone (your mid-card wins)

Never lead the Ace of Spades unless you’re trying to flush out the Queen for someone else to take.

Strategy 5: Count the Queen of Spades

Track key spade plays:

  • Has the Q♠ been played yet?
  • Who probably has it? (Who passed cards your way? Who’s been ducking spades?)
  • How many spades are left?

Once the Queen is gone, spades become safe. High spade holders can relax.

Strategy 6: Shooting the Moon

When to attempt it:

  • You hold A♥, K♥, Q♥ (you can run hearts)
  • You hold Q♠ with spade protection
  • You have a long suit (6+ of one suit) to run tricks
  • You’re behind in score and need a 26-point swing

How to execute: Win EVERY trick containing a heart or the Queen. If you miss even one heart, you’ll likely end up with 20+ points instead of 0.

Warning: A failed moon shot is catastrophic. Only attempt it with a dominant hand.

Quick Tips Summary

  1. Pass to create voids — your most powerful weapon
  2. Keep low cards — they’re your safety net
  3. Track the Queen of Spades — know where she is at all times
  4. Play 4th when possible — seeing all cards before deciding is huge
  5. Don’t take tricks you don’t need — every unnecessary trick risks points
  6. Cash non-heart aces early — before someone trumps them with hearts
