How to Play Spoons — Complete Beginner's Guide
Learn the rules of Spoons in 5 minutes — the fast, chaotic party card game that always ends in laughter.
How to play Spoons: Complete rules, setup, and tips for this hilarious party card game.
Spoons is the party card game that turns any gathering into controlled chaos. Think Musical Chairs meets card collecting — when someone gets four of a kind, the race for spoons begins, and the slowest player is eliminated. It’s fast, funny, and perfect for all ages.
What You Need
- Players: 3-13 (best with 5-8)
- Deck: Standard 52 cards (use 4 cards of the same rank per player)
- Spoons: One fewer spoon than the number of players
- Goal: Don’t be the last person to grab a spoon
Setup
- Place spoons in the center of the table — one fewer than the number of players (6 players = 5 spoons)
- For each player, include one set of 4 matching cards (e.g., four Kings, four 7s, etc.) — or simply use the full deck
- Shuffle and deal 4 cards to each player
- Players sit in a circle
How to Play
Card Passing
- Everyone looks at their 4 cards
- The dealer picks up a card from the remaining deck
- The dealer keeps or passes the card to their left (they must always maintain exactly 4 cards)
- The next player picks up the passed card, decides to keep or pass it, and passes one card left
- This continues around the circle — the last player places their discard in a “trash” pile
- Cards pass continuously and simultaneously — don’t wait for others
Collecting Four of a Kind
Your goal is to collect 4 cards of the same rank (four Queens, four 5s, etc.). As cards circulate, keep cards that match and pass cards that don’t.
Grabbing a Spoon
When ANY player collects four of a kind:
- They quietly grab a spoon from the center
- As soon as other players notice, they also grab spoons
- The last person without a spoon gets a letter (S-P-O-O-N-S)
- When someone spells S-P-O-O-N-S, they’re eliminated
After Each Round
- Remove one spoon (always one fewer than remaining players)
- Reshuffle, redeal, and play another round
- Continue until one player remains — they win!
Key Rules
- Keep exactly 4 cards at all times
- Card passing is continuous — don’t hold up the flow
- Anyone can grab a spoon once they see someone else reach for one — you don’t need four of a kind
- Be subtle when grabbing your spoon — sneaky grabs give you an advantage
- No slapping hands or blocking other players’ grabs
- If spoons scatter, only grab one — first come, first served
Variations
Tongue (Silent Version)
Instead of grabbing spoons, stick out your tongue when you get four of a kind. Others must notice and stick out their tongue too. Last one sticking out their tongue loses. No noise, maximum stealth.
Pig
Same as Tongue, but touch your nose instead. The last notice gets a letter toward P-I-G.
Speed Spoons
The dealer continuously draws and passes cards at maximum speed. No pausing, no thinking — pure reflexive chaos.
Blindfolded Round
For the final round with 2 players, blindfold both. Pure comedy.
Strategy Tips
Watch the Spoons, Not Just Your Cards
Peripheral vision is your friend. Glance at the spoons regularly while sorting your hand. The person who only watches their cards always loses.
Be Subtle When Grabbing
Don’t lunge dramatically. Calmly reach for a spoon like you’re just stretching. By the time others notice, you’ve already won the round.
Commit to a Rank Early
Don’t try to collect multiple ranks simultaneously. Pick the rank you have the most of and pass everything else quickly.
Pass Cards Fast
Speed up the circulation. The faster cards move, the more chances you get to see useful cards. Slow passing benefits no one.
Sit Next to the Dealer
The dealer sees cards first, giving them a slight advantage. Sitting next to the dealer means you get cards early in the circulation.
Spoons is proof that the best party games don’t need complex rules or expensive components. A deck of cards, some spoons, and a group of friends — that’s all you need for one of the most reliably hilarious game night experiences.
