How to Play Speed — Complete Rules for the Fast Two-Player Card Game
The fastest two-player card game ever — no turns, pure speed, simultaneous play.
How to play Speed: Complete rules, setup, gameplay, and strategy tips for beginners.
Speed (also called Spit) is the fastest card game you’ll ever play. There are no turns — both players play simultaneously, racing to get rid of their cards first. It’s a head-to-head sprint that tests your reflexes, pattern recognition, and ability to think under pressure.
What You Need
- Players: 2 (exactly)
- Deck: Standard 52-card deck
- Objective: Be the first to play all your cards
- Time per round: 2-5 minutes
- Skill required: Speed and reflexes
Setup
Divide the deck evenly — 26 cards per player.
Each player creates this layout:
- 5 stock piles — Deal 1 card face-up onto each of 5 piles in front of you
- Draw pile — Place the remaining 15 cards face-down beside your stock piles (this is your draw pile)
- Center — Leave space for 2 center piles between the players
Your layout:
[Draw Pile] [1] [1] [1] [1] [1] ← 5 face-up stock cards
[Center 1] [Center 2] ← shared play area
[1] [1] [1] [1] [1] ← opponent's stock cards
[Draw Pile]
Both players use one hand only (use your dominant hand).
Starting the Game
Both players simultaneously say “Ready, set, SPEED!” and each flips the top card of their draw pile onto a center pile. Now there are two face-up center piles.
Play begins immediately — no turns.
How to Play
The Core Rule
You may play a card from any of your 5 stock piles onto either center pile if the card is exactly one rank higher or lower than the center pile’s top card.
- A 7 can go on a 6 or an 8
- A Queen can go on a Jack or King
- An Ace connects to both King and 2 (wraps around)
Simultaneous Play
- There are no turns — play as fast as you can
- If both players try to play on the same center pile at the same time, the first card down stays (the other player takes their card back)
- One hand only — no two-handed play
Refilling Stock Piles
When one of your 5 stock piles is empty:
- Draw a card from your draw pile and place it face-up on that empty spot
- You can refill while still playing on other piles (if you’re fast enough)
- Keep all 5 stock positions filled whenever possible
When Nobody Can Play
If neither player can make a legal play (both are stuck):
- Both players simultaneously flip the top card of their draw pile onto the center piles
- Play resumes immediately
If draw piles are both empty and nobody can play, shuffle the center piles to create new center cards and continue.
Winning
A player wins the round when they’ve played all their stock cards AND their draw pile is empty — no cards left at all. Shout “Speed!” (or simply slam your hand on the smaller center pile in Spit rules).
Match Format
Play best of 3 or best of 5 rounds. In the Spit variant, the round winner gets to choose the smaller center pile for their next-round deck, creating an advantage.
Tips for Speed
Card Management
- Scan all 5 stock piles constantly — know your options
- Play from largest piles first — this opens up more spaces to draw
- Don’t fixate on one center pile — check both
- Refill empty spots immediately — more stock cards = more options
Speed Improvement
- Use your peripheral vision — watch both center piles simultaneously
- Develop muscle memory — the grab-place motion should be automatic
- Don’t hesitate — if a play is valid, make it instantly. Thinking is your enemy.
- Practice card recognition — know immediately that a 9 plays on 8 or 10 without thinking
Advanced Tactics
- Block your opponent — if you can play on either center pile, choose the one that helps your opponent less
- Create flow — sequence your plays so one creates an opening for the next
- Track center cards — remember what’s on top even while reaching for your next card
- Stay calm under pressure — frantic movements are slower than smooth, deliberate ones
Variations
Spit (Staircase Layout)
Instead of 5 single cards, create a staircase:
- Pile 1: 1 card face-up
- Pile 2: 1 face-down, 1 face-up
- Pile 3: 2 face-down, 1 face-up
- Pile 4: 3 face-down, 1 face-up
- Pile 5: 4 face-down, 1 face-up
Uses 15 cards in the staircase, 11 in the draw pile. When you play a face-up card, flip the card beneath it. More strategic because hidden cards add uncertainty.
California Speed
Match by rank rather than +1/-1. Play a card on a center pile if it matches the rank exactly. Much faster and more chaotic.
Speed for Kids (Ages 6+)
Play with open stock piles (all visible) and allow two hands. Reduces the speed pressure while teaching the +1/-1 mechanic.
