How to play Ludo: Complete rules, setup, movement, and strategy tips for beginners.
Ludo is one of the world’s most played board games — a family-friendly race where dice determine your pace and capturing sends opponents back to start. Derived from the ancient Indian game Pachisi, Ludo has been entertaining families since the Victorian era and now has hundreds of millions of players online.
What You Need
- Players: 2-4 (each player chooses a color)
- Board: Cross-shaped board with colored starting areas and home columns
- Tokens: 4 per player (matching their color)
- Die: 1 standard six-sided die
- Goal: Get all 4 of your tokens from start to home before anyone else
Board Layout
The Ludo board has:
- 4 colored starting areas (one per player, in the corners)
- A shared track of squares forming a cross-shaped path (52 squares total)
- 4 colored home columns (final 6 squares leading to the center, one per color)
- The home triangle in the center (destination)
Each player’s token travels the shared track, then enters their own colored home column to reach the center.
How to Play
Starting — Roll a 6
All 4 tokens begin in your starting area (off the board). To enter a token onto the board, you must roll a 6:
- Roll a 6 → place one token on your starting square (the colored square at the edge of the board)
- Rolling a 6 also grants you an extra roll
- If you roll three 6s in a row, your turn ends (prevents abuse)
Moving Tokens
After a token is on the board:
- Roll the die
- Move any one of your active tokens forward that many squares
- Tokens move clockwise around the board
Capturing
If your token lands on a square occupied by an opponent’s token, that token is captured:
- The captured token returns to its owner’s starting area
- They must roll a 6 to re-enter it
- Capturing earns you a bonus roll in many versions
Safe Squares
Certain squares are safe — tokens on these squares cannot be captured:
- Star squares (marked on the board)
- Starting squares for each color
- Home column squares (your color only)
If two tokens of the same color are on the same square, they form a block that opponents cannot pass.
Entering Home
After traveling around the entire board, your token enters your colored home column (the 6 squares leading to the center):
- Only YOUR tokens can enter your home column
- You must roll the exact number to reach the center home triangle
- If you can’t use a roll to move within the home column, you must move a different token (or forfeit)
Winning
The first player to get all 4 tokens into the home triangle wins. Games continue for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place.
Rolling a 6 — Special Rules
Rolling a 6 is the most important event in Ludo:
- Enter a new token from your starting area, OR
- Move an existing token 6 squares forward
- You get an extra roll regardless of which option you choose
- Rolling three consecutive 6s ends your turn immediately
Strategy Tips
Spread Your Tokens
Don’t focus on racing just one token. Having multiple tokens on the board gives you more options and puts pressure on opponents across the board.
Prioritize Entering the Board
When you roll a 6, entering a new token is usually better than advancing an existing one — more tokens on the board means more flexibility.
Capture When You Can
Sending opponents back to start is a huge advantage. If you can land on an opponent’s token, take the opportunity — it costs them another 6 roll to re-enter.
Use Safe Squares
When choosing between advancing to a safe square or a regular square, choose the safe square. Protecting your tokens from capture is especially important when you’re deep into the board.
Race the Last Token
When you have 3 tokens home and 1 remaining, focus entirely on getting that last token home. The difference between 1st and 2nd place is often this final race.
Block Opponents
If two of your tokens are on the same square, they form a block. Position blocks strategically to prevent opponents from passing — especially near the home column entrances.
