How to Play Durak — Rules & Strategy for Russia's #1 Card Game
The most popular card game in Russia — a unique game where the goal is to avoid being last.
How to play Durak: Complete rules, setup, gameplay, and strategy tips for beginners.
Durak is the most popular card game in Russia and the post-Soviet world. Unlike most Western card games, Durak has no winner — only a loser. The last player holding cards is the durak (fool), and everyone else escapes. This creates an entirely different dynamic from games like Hearts or Spades.
The game revolves around attacks and defenses using a trump suit, and its shedding mechanic creates tense endgame situations where a single mistake can leave you holding the bag.
What You Need
- Players: 2–6 (best with 3–4)
- Deck: 36 cards — standard deck stripped to 6 through Ace in each suit
- Objective: Don’t be the last player holding cards
- Time per hand: 10–20 minutes
Setup
- Shuffle the 36-card deck
- Deal 6 cards to each player
- Place the remaining cards face-down as the draw pile (talon)
- Flip the bottom card of the draw pile face-up — its suit is trump for the entire game
- This face-up card remains partially visible under the draw pile and is drawn last
Card Ranking
Within each suit, cards rank from low to high:
6 → 7 → 8 → 9 → 10 → J → Q → K → A
Trump cards beat all non-trump cards, regardless of rank. A 6 of trump beats an Ace of any other suit.
How a Turn Works
1. The Attack
The attacker plays a card face-up on the table in front of the defender.
2. The Defense
The defender must beat the attacking card by playing:
- A higher card of the same suit, OR
- Any trump card (if the attack card is non-trump)
- A higher trump (if the attack card is trump)
3. Continuation
After each successful defense, the attacker (and other players in Podkidnoy variant) may add more cards if:
- The new card’s rank matches any card already on the table (attack or defense cards)
- The defender has enough cards in hand to cover all attacks (maximum cards thrown = defender’s hand size)
4. Resolution
If the defender beats all attacking cards:
- All played cards go to the discard pile (removed from the game)
- The defender becomes the next attacker
If the defender cannot or chooses not to beat the cards:
- The defender picks up ALL cards from the table (both attack and defense cards)
- The defender loses their turn — the next player after them attacks the player after that
5. Drawing Cards
After each bout, players draw cards from the talon back up to 6 cards:
- The attacker draws first
- Other participants draw next
- The defender draws last
This is critical — the defender draws last, meaning they may get stuck with weaker cards from the bottom of the pile.
Trump Strategy
The trump suit defines the entire game:
- Save trump cards for emergencies — Don’t waste them on small attacks early
- Small trumps are valuable for defense — Even a 6 of trump beats any non-trump Ace
- The face-up trump under the draw pile can be strategically acquired — if you have a 6 of trump, you can swap it for the face-up card if it’s higher (variant rule)
Endgame
Once the draw pile is exhausted:
- Players no longer draw back up to 6
- Play continues with dwindling hands
- Players who empty their hand escape — they’re safe
- The last player holding cards is the durak (fool)
If the last two players run out simultaneously in the final bout, the game is a draw — a success story with no durak.
Variants
Podkidnoy Durak (Throw-In)
The most common variant worldwide. All players (not just the attacker) can throw in additional attack cards matching ranks on the table. This makes defense much harder.
Perevodnoy Durak (Transfer)
The defender can deflect an attack by playing a card of the same rank as the attacking card. The attack transfers to the next player, who must now defend against all the cards. Chain transfers are possible.
Stolovy Durak (Table)
All attacking cards are played face-down, and the defender must beat them one at a time, flipping each before responding. More luck-based.
Prostoy Durak (Simple)
Only the designated attacker can play cards — no throw-ins from other players. The easiest version for beginners.
Strategy Tips
Early Game
- Shed low non-trump cards quickly — 6s, 7s, and 8s of non-trump suits are nearly useless for defense
- Attack with pairs or matching ranks — This forces the defender to use more cards
- Track the trump suit — Know how many trumps have been played
Mid Game
- Count cards aggressively — With only 36 cards, card counting is very practical
- Avoid picking up early — Taking cards grows your hand and puts you behind
- Attack with cards matching the defender’s likely weaknesses — If they just played their only Heart, attack with Hearts
Late Game
- Hold your highest trumps — The endgame often comes down to trump battles
- Don’t attack if your opponent might deflect — In Perevodnoy, attacks can backfire
- Play to make someone else the durak — If you’re safe, pile cards on the remaining players
Durak vs Western Card Games
| Feature | Durak | Hearts | Spades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Don’t be last | Fewest points | Most tricks bid |
| Winner | None (only a loser) | Lowest score | Highest score |
| Trump | Fixed suit | None (usually) | Spades always |
| Partnerships | No (free-for-all) | No | Yes (pairs) |
| Deck | 36 cards | 52 cards | 52 cards |
Why Durak Is Special
Durak’s “no winner” design philosophy is almost unique in card gaming. It creates a social dynamic where alliances form and dissolve naturally — two players might team up to dump cards on a third, then immediately turn on each other. The attack/defense mechanism feels like a card combat game, and the shrinking draw pile creates mounting tension as the endgame approaches.
If you’re used to Western trick-taking games, Durak will feel refreshingly different.
