How to play Canasta: Complete rules, setup, gameplay, and strategy tips for beginners.

Canasta is a classic rummy-family card game for 4 players (2 teams of 2) that revolves around creating melds (groups of matching cards) and completing canastas (7-card melds). It was one of the most popular card games in the world during the 1950s and continues to thrive today.

What You Need

  • Players: 4 (2 teams of 2, sitting across from each other)
  • Decks: 2 standard decks + 4 Jokers = 108 cards
  • Goal: Be the first team to reach 5,000 points

Card Values

Card Value Role
Jokers 50 Wild card
2s 20 Wild card
Aces 20 Natural card
K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8 10 Natural card
7, 6, 5, 4 5 Natural card
Black 3s 5 Blocker (can’t be melded normally)
Red 3s 100 Bonus card (special rules)

Setup

  1. Shuffle both decks together
  2. Deal 11 cards to each player
  3. Place the remaining cards face down as the stock pile
  4. Flip the top card face-up to start the discard pile
  5. If a red 3 or wild card is flipped, stack cards until a natural card appears

Red Threes

If you’re dealt a red 3, place it face-up in front of you and draw a replacement card. Red 3s score 100 bonus points each (or 200 each if your team collects all 4). However, if your team has NOT made any melds by round’s end, red 3s count as negative 100 each.

How to Play a Turn

Each turn has 3 phases:

1. Draw

Either:

  • Draw 2 cards from the stock pile, OR
  • Pick up the entire discard pile (special rules — see below)

2. Meld (Optional)

Play melds from your hand onto the table:

  • A meld requires at least 3 cards of the same rank
  • Must contain at least 2 natural cards (not wild)
  • Maximum 3 wild cards per meld
  • Add cards to your team’s existing melds

3. Discard

Place 1 card face-up on the discard pile. Your turn ends.

Picking Up the Discard Pile

This is the most powerful (and most restricted) move in Canasta:

To pick up the pile, you must:

  1. Have at least 2 natural cards in your hand that match the top discard card
  2. Immediately meld those 2 cards + the top card (forming a new meld or adding to an existing one)
  3. Take ALL remaining cards in the discard pile into your hand

The pile is “frozen” when:

  • It contains a wild card (Joker or 2)
  • A black 3 is on top (frozen for that turn only)
  • Your team hasn’t made their initial meld yet

When the pile is frozen, you can ONLY pick it up with 2 natural cards matching the top card.

Initial Meld Requirement

Your team’s first meld(s) in each round must meet a minimum point value:

Team Score Required Minimum
Negative 15
0–1,499 50
1,500–2,999 90
3,000+ 120

Count the face value of all cards in your initial meld(s). Wild cards count their point values (Joker = 50, 2 = 20).

Canastas

A canasta is a meld that reaches 7 or more cards:

Type Description Bonus
Natural canasta 7+ cards, all natural (no wilds) 500
Mixed canasta 7+ cards, includes wild card(s) 300

You must complete at least 1 canasta before your team can go out.

Going Out

To end the round, you must:

  1. Have your team complete at least 1 canasta
  2. Meld all remaining cards from your hand (or meld all but 1 and discard it)
  3. Optionally ask your partner’s permission first

Going-out bonus: 100 points (200 if you go out “concealed” — melding your entire hand at once without having previously melded)

Scoring

After a round ends, each team calculates:

Category Points
Card values in melds Face value
Natural canasta bonus +500 each
Mixed canasta bonus +300 each
Going out bonus +100
Red 3s +100 each (or -100 if no melds made)
Cards left in hand Negative face value

Quick Strategy Tips

  1. Keep pairs — Having 2 natural cards of the same rank lets you pick up the discard pile
  2. Watch the pile — A big discard pile is worth picking up; a small one often isn’t
  3. Complete canastas — A meld sitting at 5-6 cards is vulnerable; push it to 7 for the bonus
  4. Communicate with your partner — Safe discards help your partner; dangerous discards help opponents
  5. Don’t discard wild cards — They freeze the pile and are too valuable to give up
  6. Go out when opponents have big hands — Their unmelded cards count against them
