10 Strategic Principles

These tips will immediately improve your Hearts play and help you consistently finish with fewer points.

1. Pass Away Danger Cards

The pass is your best chance to improve a bad hand. Priority cards to pass:

  • Queen of Spades — unless you can protect her with low spades
  • Ace and King of Spades — they can catch the Queen
  • High hearts — they’ll win tricks containing point cards
  • Ace of any suit — high aces win tricks you might not want

2. Void a Suit Early

A void (having no cards in a suit) is extremely powerful:

  • When that suit is led, you can dump any card — including the Queen of Spades or high hearts
  • Try to create a void during the pass by giving away all cards of your shortest suit
  • Diamonds and clubs are usually the best suits to void

3. Protect Yourself From the Queen of Spades

The Queen of Spades is the most dangerous card (13 points):

  • Keep low spades (2-6) so you can play under the Queen
  • Pass the Queen if you don’t have enough low spades to protect yourself
  • Pass the Ace or King of Spades if you have them — they attract the Queen
  • If you must keep the Queen, make sure you have at least 3-4 other spades below her

4. Lead Low Early

In the opening tricks:

  • Lead with low cards to stay safe
  • Let other players win tricks and accumulate points
  • Save your high cards for situations you can control

5. Don’t Break Hearts Too Early

Breaking hearts (playing the first heart) changes the game significantly:

  • Once hearts are broken, they can be led — opening up more danger
  • Don’t break hearts unless you’ll benefit from it
  • If you have a void, save your hearts for when you can dump the highest ones on someone else’s trick

6. Count the Queen of Spades

Always know whether the Queen of Spades has been played:

  • If she hasn’t appeared, be cautious with high spades
  • If she has been played, you can relax about spades
  • Track who might have her based on passing and play patterns

7. Watch What Gets Passed to You

The cards passed to you reveal information:

  • If someone passes you high spades, they’re likely trying to void spades or dodge the Queen
  • If you receive high cards in a suit, the passer is probably eliminating that suit
  • Use this information to adjust your strategy

8. Play High When Tricks Are Safe

Not all tricks are dangerous:

  • If no point cards can appear in a trick, it’s safe to play high
  • Use safe tricks to shed your high cards that could catch points later
  • Clubs and diamonds (early in the round) are often safe tricks

9. Don’t Panic About a Few Points

Hearts is a long game:

  • Taking 2-3 points in a round is fine — it’s below average
  • Don’t take extreme risks to avoid a single heart
  • Focus on avoiding the Queen of Spades (13 points) more than individual hearts (1 point each)

10. Watch for Moon Shooters

If one player is collecting all the point cards, they might be shooting the moon:

  • Pay attention if someone keeps winning tricks with hearts in them
  • If you suspect a moon shot, take one heart to block it
  • A single heart taken by you prevents 26 points being added to your score
