Why the Endgame Matters

The last 3-4 tricks of a Hearts round often determine:

  • Who catches the Queen of Spades (if she’s still out)
  • Who takes the final hearts
  • Whether a moon shot succeeds or fails
  • The difference between a good round and a bad one

By trick 10, most of the deck has been played. Information is your greatest asset.

What You Should Know by Trick 10

Must-Know Information

What Why
Queen of Spades status Is she played? Who has her?
Hearts remaining How many of 13 hearts are still out?
Who’s void in what Which suits can opponents not follow?
Your remaining cards Plan your final 3-4 plays now

Ideal Knowledge (Advanced)

  • Exact cards remaining in each player’s hand
  • Which specific hearts are still out
  • Who will lead each remaining trick

Endgame Scenarios

Scenario 1: Queen is Already Played

The safest endgame. Without the Queen:

  • Maximum remaining penalty is the hearts still out (1 point each)
  • High cards are relatively safe
  • Play to minimize heart intake — but a few points aren’t devastating

Scenario 2: Queen is Still Out

The most dangerous endgame:

  • 13 points are still at stake
  • Track who might have the Queen
  • Avoid winning spade tricks at all costs
  • If you have the Queen, find a way to dump her or play low spades under her

Scenario 3: Moon Shot in Progress

Someone is taking all the hearts. In the endgame:

  • If you’re the shooter: Ensure you can take every remaining heart
  • If defending against a shooter: You need to take just ONE point card to stop them
  • This is often decided in the final 2-3 tricks

Endgame Techniques

1. The Exit Play

You’re holding cards you don’t want to lead with. The solution:

  • Play a card that loses the trick to get out of the lead
  • Let someone else lead and face the danger
  • Example: Play a low non-heart card under someone else’s higher card

2. The Forced Win

Sometimes you can’t avoid winning a trick. Minimize damage:

  • If you must win, win a trick with no point cards
  • Lead a suit where no one will dump hearts
  • Accept 1-2 hearts if it avoids the Queen

3. The Read

Use your card count to predict what remains:

  • “The only spade left is the Queen — whoever leads spades catches her”
  • “Three hearts remain: K♥, 7♥, 3♥ — Player B has two of them”
  • This precision lets you make perfect decisions

4. The Squeeze

Force an opponent into a losing play:

  • Lead a suit that forces them to choose between two bad options
  • Example: They have Q♠ and K♥ left — leading any suit they can’t follow forces them to play one of those

Common Endgame Mistakes

Mistake 1: Leading High Late

  • Leading an Ace or King in the last 3 tricks is dangerous
  • Opponents are more likely to be void and will dump hearts on you
  • Lead low cards late — lose the trick intentionally if needed

Mistake 2: Forgetting the Queen

  • If you haven’t tracked whether the Queen was played, you’re flying blind
  • Always know the Queen’s status entering the endgame

Mistake 3: Ignoring Moon Threats

  • If one player has taken 20+ points with no sign of stopping, they’re shooting
  • You MUST take at least 1 point card to stop them — even if it costs you points
  • Don’t let a shooter succeed just because you were avoiding 1 heart

Mistake 4: Not Planning Ahead

  • By trick 10, you have 3-4 cards left — you can plan all of them
  • Think through: “If I play X, they’ll play Y, and then I’ll play Z”
  • Winging it in the endgame loses games

The Final Trick

The last trick is unique:

  • Everyone plays their final card — no choice involved
  • If hearts are among the final cards, someone will take them
  • The player who leads the final trick has some control
  • But often the final trick is predetermined by the cards remaining

If you set things up correctly, your last card should be a low card in a safe suit.

Practice Exercise

After each round, review the endgame:

  • Did you know where the Queen was?
  • Could you count the remaining hearts?
  • Did you plan your final plays?
  • What would you do differently?

This review process rapidly improves your endgame skill.
