Hand and Foot is an expanded variant of Canasta that has grown enormously popular in North American retirement communities and card clubs. The game gets its name from its distinctive format: each player receives two piles of cards — their hand (the pile they play from first) and their foot (a second pile that becomes their hand once the first is exhausted). This structure enables much larger melds and more dramatic point totals than standard Canasta, with well-played hands sometimes scoring several thousand points.
Played with 5–6 standard decks including jokers (270 cards total), Hand and Foot accommodates 2–6 players, though four-player partnership play is most common. The game retains Canasta’s core mechanic of forming melds and building toward canastas (sets of seven or more cards), but the massive card pools and multi-round progression create a deeper, more strategic experience that typically takes 2–3 hours to complete.
How to Play Hand and Foot
Each player is dealt two separate piles of 11 or 13 cards. Players work through their hand first; when exhausted, they pick up their foot. The goal is to score points through melds of 3 or more same-ranked cards. A canasta (complete meld of 7+ cards) can be natural (no wild cards, 500 points) or mixed (some wilds, 300 points). Red 3s are bonus cards worth 100–500 points depending on quantity held. Black 3s block the discard pile. Going out requires at least two canastas and scores a 100-point bonus. Scoring includes card values, canastas, and bonuses accumulated across multiple rounds.
