How to Score a Hand and Foot Round

Step 1 — Count meld value

Add the point value of every card your team successfully melded (placed in books on the table). Use the card value table above. Cards in completed books AND in progress melds both count.

Step 2 — Add book bonuses

Count your complete books of 7 cards. Clean books (all natural cards) = +500 each. Dirty books (includes wild cards) = +300 each. Wild card books (all Jokers and 2s) = +1,500 each.

Step 3 — Add going out bonus

If your team went out (played all cards from both hand and foot), add 100 points.

Step 4 — Subtract card penalties

Count all cards still in your team’s hand or foot that were not played. Subtract their face value as penalty points.

Step 5 — Subtract 3 penalties

Any 3 (red or black) remaining in your team’s hand or foot at game end costs −500 each. This is one of the most painful penalties in the game — watch for 3s in your foot.

Step 6 — Calculate round total

Positive subtotal minus all penalties = round total. Transfer to the running total sheet.

The biggest scoring difference: in Canasta, red threes are bonuses. In Hand and Foot, 3s are brutal penalties. Always play or discard 3s when possible — never let them sit in your foot.
