What is Go Fish?

Go Fish is a classic card game for 2 to 6 players using a standard 52-card deck. Players ask opponents for specific card ranks to collect books (sets of four matching cards). The player with the most books at the end wins. It's the perfect introduction to card games and a family favorite worldwide.

Key Game Specifications

  • Players: 2–6
  • Deck: Standard 52 cards
  • Deal: 7 cards each (2–3 players) or 5 cards each (4–6 players)
  • Objective: Collect the most books (sets of four matching cards)

How to Play Go Fish

1. The Deal

Deal 7 cards to each player (with 2–3 players) or 5 cards (with 4–6 players). Place the remaining cards face-down as the fish pond (draw pile).

2. Taking Turns

On your turn, ask any opponent for a specific rank you already hold. For example, "Do you have any Kings?" The opponent must hand over all cards of that rank. If they have none, they say "Go Fish!" and you draw from the pond.

3. Making Books

When you collect all four cards of a rank, lay them down as a book. If you get what you asked for (or draw it from the pond), you get another turn.

4. Winning

The game ends when all 13 books have been made. The player with the most books wins!

Strategy Tips

  • Remember what opponents ask for: This reveals what cards they hold. Use this information to avoid giving them what they need.
  • Ask strategically: Ask for ranks where you hold 2–3 cards to maximize your chance of completing a book.
  • Track what's been booked: Keep mental notes on which ranks are already complete.
  • Spread your asks: Don't always ask the same player — gather information from multiple opponents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cards do you deal in Go Fish?

7 cards for 2–3 players, 5 cards for 4–6 players. The remaining cards form the fish pond (draw pile).

What happens when the fish pond runs out?

If you're told "Go Fish" but the pond is empty, your turn simply ends. Play continues until all 13 books are completed.

Can I ask for a rank I don't have?

No. You must hold at least one card of the rank you're asking for.

Is Go Fish just for kids?

Go Fish is simple enough for children as young as 4 or 5, but the memory and deduction elements make it engaging for adults too — especially with more players.
