Four in a Row Game Room
About Connect Four
Connect Four is one of the most iconic two-player strategy games of the modern era, published by Milton Bradley in 1974. Players take turns dropping colored discs into a vertical seven-column, six-row grid, with each disc falling to the lowest available position in its column. The goal is to be the first to form a line of four discs of your color — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. What appears simple at first glance conceals considerable depth: with over 4.5 trillion possible game states, Connect Four rewards careful planning well beyond its accessible surface.
In 1988, mathematician James Allen proved that the first player always wins with perfect play on the standard grid. Despite this theoretical outcome, human games are rarely played perfectly, and the interplay of threats, double threats, and zugzwang keeps every match genuinely tense. Learning to spot and create “seven traps” — positions where you control both diagonals crossing a key square — is the hallmark of advanced Connect Four strategy.
How to Play Connect Four
Two players each choose a color of discs. Players alternate dropping one disc at a time into any of the 7 columns. The disc falls to the lowest empty row in that column. The first player to create an unbroken line of 4 discs — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins. If the grid fills completely with no winner, the game is a draw.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Connect Four free to play on Rare Pike?
Yes, completely free. No account or download needed.
Is Connect Four solved?
Yes — with perfect play the first player always wins. However, perfect play requires memorizing hundreds of key positions, so human games remain genuinely unpredictable in casual play.
What is a double threat in Connect Four?
A double threat is when you have two separate ways to complete a line of four on your next turn. Since your opponent can only block one, the other wins the game. Creating double threats is the most important advanced skill in Connect Four.
What strategy should beginners use?
Focus on controlling the center columns (central discs participate in more possible winning lines), work toward creating two simultaneous threats, and always watch for your opponent’s potential winning moves.
