Go Fish — The Easiest Card Game

Learn in 2 minutes.

How it works:

  1. Each player gets 5-7 cards
  2. Ask any player: “Do you have any [rank]?”
  3. If yes, they give you all of that rank. If no, “Go Fish” — draw from the deck.

Learn in 5 minutes.

How it works:

  1. Get dealt 5-7 cards
  2. Make sets (3+ of the same rank) or runs (3+ in sequence of one suit)

Gin Rummy — Simple but Strategic

Learn in 10 minutes.

How it works:

  1. 2 players, 10 cards each
  2. Draw and discard to form sets (3+ same rank) or runs (3+ sequential same suit)
  3. When your unmatched cards (deadwood) total 10 or less, you can knock
  4. If ALL cards are matched, you’ve scored gin (bonus!)

The draw-discard-meld cycle is the same as Tonk, just with deeper strategy.

Hearts — Easy Rules, Deep Strategy

Learn in 15 minutes.

How it works:

  1. 4 players, 13 cards each
  2. Play tricks (highest card of the led suit wins)
  3. Avoid hearts (1 point each) and the Queen of Spades (13 points)
  4. Lowest score wins

The trick is that the rules are simple — but figuring out HOW to avoid hearts takes real strategy.

Spades — Learn Partnerships

Learn in 20 minutes.

How it works:

  1. 4 players in 2 teams
  2. Bid how many tricks you think you’ll win
  3. Play tricks — spades are always trump
  4. Make your bid = score. Miss your bid = penalty.

The bidding adds one extra layer over Hearts, but it’s still very learnable in one sitting.
