About Dominoes
Dominoes is one of the world’s most widely played tile games, enjoyed by people of all ages across every continent. The game likely originated in China during the 12th or 13th century and arrived in Europe — primarily Italy — in the 18th century, from where it spread globally. Each domino tile represents the result of throwing two dice, bearing two groups of dots (pips) separated by a central line. A standard double-six set contains 28 tiles ranging from 0-0 to 6-6.
Players take turns matching tiles end-to-end, building a chain across the playing surface. The strategic depth lies in counting the pips remaining in opponents’ hands, blocking them from playing, and timing when to pass or draw from the remaining tiles. Domino games come in dozens of variations: Draw Dominoes, Block Dominoes, Mexican Train, Muggins, and more — each with its own strategic flavor.
How to Play Dominoes
Shuffle the tiles face-down and each player draws a hand (typically 7 tiles in a two-player game). The player with the highest double leads. On each turn, place a tile that matches one open end of the chain. If you cannot play, draw from the boneyard (remaining tiles) or pass if the boneyard is empty. A round ends when one player places all their tiles or no one can play. The winner scores the total pip count of opponents’ remaining tiles. First to reach a set score (typically 100 or 150 points) wins the match.
