Our Dice Games
Yatzy
Yatzy is a classic dice game where you roll five dice up to three times per turn, choosing which to keep and which to re-roll. Score in categories like Ones through Sixes, Three of a Kind, Full House, Small Straight, Large Straight, and the coveted Yatzy (five of a kind). The player with the highest total score wins.
Yatzy rewards smart risk management — knowing when to play it safe with a guaranteed small score versus gambling for a high-value combination is the key skill that separates beginners from experts. Get started with our Yatzy rules guide.
Backgammon
Backgammon is a two-player race game where dice determine how far you can move your 15 checkers around the board. While dice control the numbers, strategy governs which checkers to move, when to build blocking points, and when to leave pieces vulnerable. The blend of chance and tactics has kept players coming back for over 5,000 years.
Backgammon also appears in our board games and strategy games collections — it’s a true crossover classic. New to the game? Start with our Backgammon rules guide or dive into Backgammon strategy.
History of Dice Games
Dice have a remarkably long history, and understanding their origins adds depth to every roll:
Ancient Origins (3000+ BCE)
The earliest known dice were made from animal ankle bones — called astragali or knucklebones — found in archaeological sites across Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. These roughly tetrahedral objects had four distinct sides and were used for both divination and gaming. The Royal Game of Ur, dating to approximately 2600 BCE, used four-sided dice in a race game that bears a striking resemblance to modern Backgammon.
Classical Antiquity
The Greeks and Romans refined dice into the cubic form we recognize today. Roman soldiers carried dice everywhere, and games of chance were so popular that gambling was technically illegal in Rome outside of the Saturnalia festival — a law widely ignored. The Latin word alea (die) gave us the famous phrase attributed to Julius Caesar: Alea iacta est — “The die is cast.”
Medieval and Renaissance Period
Dice games flourished throughout medieval Europe despite frequent bans by church and civic authorities. Hazard, a predecessor of modern Craps, became enormously popular in England. Meanwhile, Backgammon evolved through various forms — the Persian game Nard, the Roman Tabula — eventually reaching its modern rules by the 17th century.
Modern Era
The 20th century saw the invention of many iconic dice games. Yacht (the precursor to Yahtzee and Yatzy) emerged in the 1940s and became a worldwide phenomenon. Today, dice remain central to both dedicated dice games and as an element in board games, role-playing games, and casino games.
Types of Dice Games
Dice games generally fall into several categories:
Scoring Dice Games
Players roll dice and assign results to scoring categories. The challenge lies in deciding which combinations to pursue and when to lock in a safe score.
- Yatzy is the quintessential scoring dice game. Each turn presents a decision tree: keep the pair and aim for a Full House, or re-roll everything chasing a Large Straight?
Race/Movement Dice Games
Dice determine how pieces move across a board. Strategy comes from choosing which pieces to move and managing positional advantages.
- Backgammon is the premier example. Two dice give you options — the skill is in selecting the best combination of moves from the possibilities each roll provides.
Betting Dice Games
Games where dice rolls determine wins and losses against the house or other players. While Rare Pike doesn’t currently feature casino-style dice games, the probability principles are the same as those underlying Yatzy and Backgammon decisions.
Dice Probability Basics
Understanding basic dice probability makes you a better player in any dice game. Here are the fundamentals:
Single Die Probabilities
A fair six-sided die has an equal $\frac{1}{6}$ (≈ 16.7%) chance of landing on any face. Each roll is independent — previous results don’t influence future ones.
Two Dice Probabilities
When rolling two dice (as in Backgammon), there are 36 possible outcomes. Some totals are far more likely than others:
| Total | Combinations | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 2.8% |
| 3 | 2 | 5.6% |
| 4 | 3 | 8.3% |
| 5 | 4 | 11.1% |
| 6 | 5 | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.7% |
| 8 | 5 | 13.9% |
| 9 | 4 | 11.1% |
| 10 | 3 | 8.3% |
| 11 | 2 | 5.6% |
| 12 | 1 | 2.8% |
In Backgammon, knowing that a 7 is the most common two-dice total helps you judge when a piece is safe from being hit and when it’s vulnerable.
Five Dice Probabilities (Yatzy)
In Yatzy, rolling five dice produces $6^5 = 7{,}776$ possible outcomes. Some key probabilities on a single roll:
- Yatzy (five of a kind): $\frac{6}{7776}$ ≈ 0.08% — extremely rare, which is why it’s worth 50 points.
- Large Straight (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6): ≈ 3.1% on a single roll.
- At least one pair: ≈ 92.3% — almost guaranteed on any roll.
The re-roll mechanic in Yatzy dramatically changes these odds. Being able to keep favorable dice and re-roll the rest up to two additional times is where strategy meets probability.
Why Play Dice Games Online
Dice games on Rare Pike offer a unique blend of advantages:
- Perfect randomness. Digital dice use cryptographically fair random number generation — no loaded dice, no imperfect rolls, just pure probability every time.
- Instant setup. No searching for dice in a drawer, no lost score sheets. Open your browser and you’re playing in seconds.
- Automatic scoring. In Yatzy, the game calculates all valid scoring options for you — so you can focus on strategy rather than arithmetic.
- Play anywhere. Dice games are perfect for mobile — quick turns, simple interfaces, and games that fit into any schedule.
- Skill development. Despite the randomness, consistent winners in dice games make better probability assessments and risk decisions, skills that sharpen with every game.
