Backgammon

History of Dice Games

Dice have a remarkably long history, and understanding their origins adds depth to every roll:

Ancient Origins (3000+ BCE)

The earliest known dice were made from animal ankle bones — called astragali or knucklebones — found in archaeological sites across Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. These roughly tetrahedral objects had four distinct sides and were used for both divination and gaming. The Royal Game of Ur, dating to approximately 2600 BCE, used four-sided dice in a race game that bears a striking resemblance to modern Backgammon.

Classical Antiquity

The Greeks and Romans refined dice into the cubic form we recognize today. Roman soldiers carried dice everywhere, and games of chance were so popular that gambling was technically illegal in Rome outside of the Saturnalia festival — a law widely ignored. The Latin word alea (die) gave us the famous phrase attributed to Julius Caesar: Alea iacta est — “The die is cast.”

Medieval and Renaissance Period

Dice games flourished throughout medieval Europe despite frequent bans by church and civic authorities. Hazard, a predecessor of modern Craps, became enormously popular in England. Meanwhile, Backgammon evolved through various forms — the Persian game Nard, the Roman Tabula — eventually reaching its modern rules by the 17th century.

Modern Era

The 20th century saw the invention of many iconic dice games. Yacht (the precursor to Yahtzee and Yatzy) emerged in the 1940s and became a worldwide phenomenon. Today, dice remain central to both dedicated dice games and as an element in board games, role-playing games, and casino games.

Dice games generally fall into several categories:

Scoring Dice Games

Players roll dice and assign results to scoring categories. The challenge lies in deciding which combinations to pursue and when to lock in a safe score.

• Yatzy is the quintessential scoring dice game. Each turn presents a decision tree: keep the pair and aim for a Full House, or re-roll everything chasing a Large Straight?

Race/Movement Dice Games

Dice determine how pieces move across a board. Strategy comes from choosing which pieces to move and managing positional advantages.

Dice Probability Basics

Understanding basic dice probability makes you a better player in any dice game. Here are the fundamentals:

Single Die Probabilities

A fair six-sided die has an equal $\frac{1}{6}$ (≈ 16.7%) chance of landing on any face. Each roll is independent — previous results don’t influence future ones.

Two Dice Probabilities

When rolling two dice (as in Backgammon), there are 36 possible outcomes. Some totals are far more likely than others:

In Backgammon, knowing that a 7 is the most common two-dice total helps you judge when a piece is safe from being hit and when it’s vulnerable.

Five Dice Probabilities (Yatzy)

In Yatzy, rolling five dice produces $6^5 = 7{,}776$ possible outcomes. Some key probabilities on a single roll:

• Yatzy (five of a kind): $\frac{6}{7776}$ ≈ 0.08% — extremely rare, which is why it’s worth 50 points.
• Large Straight (1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5-6): ≈ 3.1% on a single roll.
• At least one pair: ≈ 92.3% — almost guaranteed on any roll.

The re-roll mechanic in Yatzy dramatically changes these odds. Being able to keep favorable dice and re-roll the rest up to two additional times is where strategy meets probability.
