Canasta Scoring Guide — Points, Bonuses & Penalties
Understand how scoring works in Canasta including card values, canasta bonuses, going out bonuses, and penalty points.
Canasta scoring determines winners and shapes strategy. Understanding exactly how points are awarded helps you make better decisions throughout the game.
Card Point Values
Every card in Canasta has an intrinsic point value, used for scoring melds and calculating the initial meld requirement:
| Card | Point Value |
|---|---|
| Jokers | 50 each |
| Aces | 20 each |
| Twos (wild) | 20 each |
| Kings, Queens, Jacks, 10s, 9s, 8s | 10 each |
| 7s, 6s, 5s, 4s | 5 each |
| Black 3s (♣ ♠) | 5 each |
Canasta Bonuses
The centerpiece of Canasta scoring — building canastas earns massive bonuses:
| Canasta Type | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Natural canasta (no wild cards) | 500 |
| Mixed canasta (includes wild cards) | 300 |
These bonuses are in addition to the individual card values in the canasta. A natural canasta of seven Kings is worth 500 + 70 = 570 points.
Going Out Bonuses
| Action | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Going out | 100 |
| Concealed going out | 200 (replaces the 100) |
Concealed going out means melding your entire hand in a single turn when you have not previously melded.
Red Three Bonuses
| Red 3s Collected | Bonus per Card | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 red 3 | 100 | 100 |
| 2 red 3s | 100 each | 200 |
| 3 red 3s | 100 each | 300 |
| All 4 red 3s | 200 each | 800 |
Warning: If your team has not made any melds during the round, all red 3 bonuses become penalties instead (subtracted from your score).
Initial Meld Requirements
The first meld your team makes each round must meet a minimum point total based on your cumulative score:
| Team Score | Minimum Initial Meld |
|---|---|
| Below 0 | 15 points |
| 0 – 1,499 | 50 points |
| 1,500 – 2,999 | 90 points |
| 3,000+ | 120 points |
Wild cards count toward the minimum. For example, a meld of two Kings and a joker = 10 + 10 + 50 = 70 points.
End-of-Round Scoring
When a player goes out, calculate each team’s score:
- Add canasta bonuses (500 or 300 each)
- Add going out bonus (100 or 200)
- Add red 3 bonuses (100 each, or 200 each for all four)
- Add point values of all cards in melds
- Subtract point values of all cards remaining in hand
Example Scoring
| Category | Team A | Team B |
|---|---|---|
| 2 natural canastas | +1,000 | — |
| 1 mixed canasta | +300 | +300 |
| Going out bonus | +100 | — |
| 2 red 3s | +200 | +100 |
| Cards in melds | +340 | +185 |
| Cards in hand | −0 | −75 |
| Round total | +1,940 | +510 |
Scoring Tips
- Prioritize natural canastas — the 200-point difference between natural (500) and mixed (300) adds up over multiple rounds
- Go out quickly when opponents have large hands — the penalty for cards in hand can be crippling
- Don’t hold jokers too long — if caught in hand, each one costs you 50 points
- Red 3s are risky if your team hasn’t melded — they become 100-point penalties
- Track the running score — knowing whether you need 50, 90, or 120 for the initial meld changes your entire strategy
