What is Canasta?
Canasta is a card game of the rummy family for 4 players in 2 partnerships. It uses two standard 52-card decks plus 4 jokers (108 cards total). Players form melds — groups of 3 or more cards of the same rank — and aim to build them into canastas (7-card melds) to score the most points. The name "Canasta" comes from the Spanish word for basket, referring to the tray used to hold cards.

How to Play Canasta
1. The Deal
Each player receives 11 cards. The remaining cards form the stock pile. One card is turned face-up to start the discard pile. If the turned card is a red 3, wild card, or black 3, additional cards are turned until a natural card (4 through Ace) appears.
2. Minimum Meld Requirements
Your team's first meld of each round must meet a minimum point requirement based on your cumulative score:
- Negative to 1,495: 15 points
- 1,500 to 2,995: 50 points
- 3,000 to 4,995: 90 points
- 5,000+: 120 points
3. Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Draw: Take 2 cards from the stock pile, OR pick up the entire discard pile (if you can use the top card in a meld).
- Meld: Lay new melds (3+ cards of the same rank) or add cards to your team's existing melds.
- Discard: Place one card on the discard pile to end your turn.
4. Freezing the Discard Pile
The discard pile is frozen when it contains a wild card or red 3. A frozen pile can only be picked up by a player who holds a natural pair matching the top card. Black 3s also temporarily freeze the pile for the next player.
5. Canastas
A canasta is a meld of 7 or more cards:
- Natural Canasta: No wild cards — 500 bonus points
- Mixed Canasta: Contains wild cards — 300 bonus points
Your team must complete at least one canasta before going out.
6. Going Out
To end the round, a player must meld all remaining cards (with or without a final discard). Your team must have at least one canasta. Going out earns a 100-point bonus (or 200 if "concealed" — going out without any prior melds).
7. Scoring
At the end of each round: meld card values + canasta bonuses + red 3 bonuses + going-out bonus − remaining hand values. First team to 5,000 points wins!
Strategy Tips
- Control the discard pile: Picking up a large discard pile is often the key to winning. Freeze it with wild cards when your opponents might benefit.
- Build natural canastas: The 500-point bonus for a natural canasta is enormous. Protect natural melds from wild cards when possible.
- Use black 3s strategically: Discard black 3s to block opponents from picking up the pile at critical moments.
- Watch the meld minimums: As your score increases, so does the initial meld requirement. Plan ahead to meet the threshold.
- Communicate with your partner: Pay attention to what your partner melds and discards. Coordinate your strategy.
- Don't rush to go out: Sometimes it's better to keep melding and building canastas than to end the round early.
Canasta vs Hand and Foot
Hand and Foot is a popular Canasta variant that adds a second pile of cards ("foot") for each player, uses 5 decks, and features 4 rounds with increasing meld minimums. If you enjoy Canasta, try Hand and Foot for a longer, more strategic experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cards do you deal in Canasta?
Each player receives 11 cards in standard 4-player Canasta. In 2-player Canasta, each player gets 15 cards.
Can I play Canasta with friends?
Yes! Click Play with Friends to create a private room. Share the link with your friends. Partners sit across from each other. Bots fill any empty seats.
What is a frozen discard pile?
The discard pile is frozen when it contains a wild card (2 or Joker) or a red 3. When frozen, you can only pick it up if you hold a natural pair (two non-wild cards) matching the top card of the pile and can immediately meld them.
How many points do you need to win Canasta?
5,000 points. Games are played across multiple rounds. The team that reaches 5,000 first wins. If both teams cross 5,000 in the same round, the higher score wins.
