      What is 8-Ball Pool?

8-Ball is the most popular type of pool (pocket billiards) played around the world. It is played with a cue ball and 15 object balls: seven solid-colored balls (1-7), seven striped balls (9-15), and the black 8-ball.

      How to Play

      Objective

The goal is to pocket all of your designated group of balls (either Solids or Stripes) and then legally pocket the 8-ball to win the game.

      Rules

      1. The Break: The game starts with a break shot. If a ball is pocketed, the player continues. If not, the turn passes to the opponent.
      2. Choosing Groups: The table remains "open" until a player legally pockets a called ball. That group (Solids or Stripes) becomes their target for the rest of the game.
      3. Fouls: Pocketing the cue ball (scratching) or hitting an opponent's ball first gives the opponent "ball in hand," allowing them to place the cue ball anywhere on the table.
      4. Winning: After clearing all your group's balls, you must call the pocket for the 8-ball. Pocketing it legally wins the game.
      5. Losing: You lose immediately if you pocket the 8-ball early (before clearing your group) or scratch while shooting the 8-ball.

      Strategy & Tips

      Cue Ball Control

Think about the next shot! Don't just focus on making the current ball. Try to leave the cue ball in a position that makes your next shot easy. This is called "position play."

      • Soft touch: Hitting the ball too hard often results in loss of control. Use just enough power to reach the pocket.
      • Plan your run: Identify problem balls (balls stuck together or near rails) early and plan how to break them out.
      • Defense: If you don't have a clear shot, play a "safety." Leave the cue ball in a difficult spot for your opponent.
